Inorganic anions and cations are major components of drinking water, and are responsible for its unique taste and hardness. However, some components, such as nitrite, bromide, strontium, manganese, and others represent risks to human health when consumed in excess of prescribed amounts. Other components, such as sodium and potassium should be consumed with caution among those at risk for heart disease or allergic reaction.
